Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. The gel is somewhat similar to normal breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain inside the implant shell, or it may leak into the breast implant pocket. A leaking silicone gel-filled implant will not collapse.

If you choose silicone implants, you may need to visit a plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are working properly. An ultrasound or MRI scan can assess the condition of the breast implants.

Silicone breast implants are approved by the FDA for enlargement in women 22 years of age or older.
